The feel of the place

Why take the kids here?

A compact art stop can work beautifully between larger activities when children are invited to look and respond rather than identify artists correctly. Nehru Centre hosts work by emerging and established artists across different media. Its air-conditioned gallery and Circular Gallery sit on the ground floor of the Discovery of India building. The exhibition changes, so the current show is the reason to visit; do not expect every medium mentioned in the institution’s history to be displayed at once.

  • Changing exhibitions from emerging and established artists
  • Ground-floor gallery and Circular Gallery spaces
  • A short colour, shape and storytelling visit
Which ages it suits

Editorial fit: ages 4+ for a brief guided look; older children can compare materials and artistic choices. No general admission age restriction verified.

From the parent perspective

Make the current exhibition the reason to come

This gallery changes with its exhibition programme. Its usefulness for your family depends on what is showing and how your children enjoy looking, rather than a fixed list of permanent attractions.

Check the artist and subject before promising the visit

Open the current programme and show the child a little of the work beforehand where available. A photography exhibition, paintings and sculpture can invite very different conversations. Do not promise an advertised past exhibition or an unscheduled workshop.

Give each child one work to choose

Ask what they noticed first and what they would name the piece. Spend time with a few works instead of moving mechanically around every wall. Check before taking photographs and keep hands away from works unless the exhibition explicitly invites touching.

Keep this a short cultural pause

An exhibition can fit around another Nehru Centre visit, but it need not become a full afternoon. Confirm that both ground-floor exhibition spaces are open and choose an easy exit point if the child loses interest.

Picture the visit

A short art visit that starts with noticing

Explore Nehru Centre Art Gallery with children: check the current exhibition, compare the two ground-floor spaces and use simple looking activities.

Choose the current show, not a famous name from the archive

The gallery has hosted many media and artists, but its institutional history does not describe what hangs on the walls today. Look up the exhibition title and dates, then decide whether its subject interests your child. If the programme is unclear, keep this as an optional addition rather than the only reason for a journey.

Give each child one artwork to choose

Walk through slowly and ask each child to pick a work they would like to discuss. Ask about a colour, a shape or what might be happening outside the frame. Different answers are welcome. This simple editorial approach makes a short visit purposeful without expecting art vocabulary or a formal workshop.

Treat the two spaces as separate possibilities

Both gallery spaces are on the ground floor of the Discovery of India building. That helps identify the destination, but does not prove a fully step-free journey from the street or that both rooms are open for the same exhibition. Ask reception for the entrance and current arrangement.

Leave room for a drawing afterwards

If the exhibition rules permit sketching, a small pencil notebook can give a patient child something to do. Otherwise remember one shape or colour and draw it after leaving. Keep food, running and hands away from exhibited works; choose a brief visit if close supervision is becoming difficult.

Useful once you’ve chosen

Make the visit work for you

  • Ask each child to choose one work and explain why it caught their eye.
  • Check the day’s exhibition before discussing a particular artist or medium with children.
  • Keep a generous distance from artworks and confirm photography permission.
Getting in
Enter the Discovery of India building and ask for the Art Gallery. The official page places the air-conditioned section to the left of the atrium and the Circular Gallery around the lift lobby.
Hours
A September 2025 official programme listed 11:00–19:00. That is historical programme evidence, not confirmation for today; ask the gallery for current exhibition hours.
Access & strollers
Ground-floor location is verified, but step-free entrance and accessible toilets are not. Contact the gallery on +91 22 40245406 before a visit requiring assistance.
Facilities
An air-conditioned gallery section is documented. Toilets, changing facilities, cloakroom and food permissions require confirmation.
Season & weather
Indoor option in hot or wet weather; the exhibition calendar determines what can be seen.
What to pack
Small notebook and pencil only if staff permit sketching; keep drinks and bulky bags away from artwork.

Questions parents ask

Is this the same as the Discovery of India history exposition?

No. Both are within Nehru Centre’s Discovery of India building, but the Art Gallery presents exhibitions of art while the exposition has its own cultural displays and schedule.

Will paintings by famous artists always be on display?

No. The institution’s exhibition history is not a promise about the current show. Check the exhibition title and dates before planning around a particular artist.

Where are the two gallery spaces?

The official page places both on the ground floor of the Discovery of India building: an air-conditioned gallery and the Circular Gallery. Ask reception which spaces are open.

Is there a daily children’s art workshop?

No daily workshop was verified. The centre runs art activities across the year, but each event can have separate dates, age bands and registration.

What can we do if our child knows nothing about art?

Start with “what did you notice first?” and “what might happen next?” Looking, wondering and explaining a preference are enough; no art-history knowledge is needed.

Can children touch sculpture or textured artwork?

Do not assume touching is allowed. Keep hands away unless staff explicitly identify an interactive work, and give young children a clear viewing distance.

Are the published 11–7 hours current?

They appear in an official September 2025 programme. Confirm the present exhibition schedule with the gallery instead of treating an old programme as a permanent guarantee.

Can we take photographs or draw a favourite work?

Ask gallery staff because permissions can depend on the exhibition. If photography or sketching is restricted, discuss the work and make a memory drawing later.

Does ground-floor location guarantee wheelchair access?

No. It establishes the floor, not the complete street-to-gallery route. Ask about the current entrance, thresholds and accessible toilet arrangements before making access-dependent plans.

Can we count on the same exhibition next month?

No. This is a programme-led gallery. Recheck the exhibition dates for a repeat visit rather than treating a previous show as permanent.
